Exchange Students:
Both Pia and Adam talked about how busy the first full week of school was.  Both are active with the volleyball teams.  Pia said she found Canandaiuga Academy to be quite large and a bit confusing finding one's way around the complex.
Announcements:
  • President Jack shared information about a letter the Board had sent to District Governor, Mark Wyse.  The letter was concerning the possible formation of an AM club in Canandaigua and the manner in which the issue was being handled.  Jack said he had an hour long conversation with the Governor the night before on the subject.  He then asked Jim Holden to address the club and explain the process involved in forming a new Rotary club.  Jim shared a club is not created overnight.  It normally takes between 2 and 3 years for a club to come to fruition.  The first step is for those who are interested in an AM club to find a location to meet.  (The owner of Akropolis Restaurant has said the club could meet there.)  There is a requirement for the new club to obtain at least 20 new members.  (Jim said they currently have a list of approximately 60 folks they could contact.  These being individuals who, for whatever reason, chose not to join or to stay as a member of the current Canandaigua Rotary Club.)  The new club would have to demonstrate a successful track record of community activities and fundraisers prior to submitting an application to Rotary International to become a bonafide Rotary AM club.  President Jack shared that Rhoda Childs and Dick McCaughey will be our club representatives on the District committee for the formation of a new AM club in the District.  Canandaigua is not the only community being considered for the AM club.  There are a total of 5 communities being considered.
  • Tom Sheavly - Rotary Family Picnic to be held on Sunday, September 27 at Greg Gullo's home.  Picnic starts at 2 PM, dinner to be served at 4PM.  Please be sure to let Tom know if you are or are not attending.  Adults are $12, children $2.
  • Jean Logan has sign-up sheets on the table for folks to bring either a dessert or an appetizer to the family picnic.
  • Table numbers will be handed out once a month at the meetings in hopes of getting Rotarians to meet and talk with members they don't currently know or know well.
  • SAVE THE DATE - Saturday, October 17 @ 7:30 AM - Adopt A Highway
Fines:
  • Dick McCaughey donated his fine to Rotary International.  Dick spent quite a bit of time up north and was the guest pastor at Big Moose Community Chapel.  This was his 11th season as guest pastor there.
  • Paul & Judy Minor returned from their honeymoon to Nantucket.  President Jack said its customary when 2 Rotarians from the club marry for the couple to donate $50.  Luckily for Paul & Judy they had a pit pass!
  • Doug Finch paid a fine for being absent for an extended period.  Doug explained he had been busy working at his business during the summer and for Canandaigua City Council and the office of State Assemblyman, Brian Kolb.
  • Lloyd Lill had to pay a fine to retrieve a folder he left at Steamboat the week before.
Happy Dollars:
  • Dick Murphy for being able to visit his daughters and their families in Denver.
  • Ray Henry - his daughter, who attends Gretchen Art Institute in Pittsburgh, had one of her photographs selected to be part of the G20 Summit that will be taking place in Pittsburgh this week.
Remembrances:
Two cards were passed around.  One for Chuck Lewis who is in the hospital and one for Rhoda Childs whose nephew from Penn Yan passed away.
Program notes:
Bill McGuigan, Animal Control Officer since 1994, gave an informative presentation on the Ontario County Humane Society.  Founded in 1990, the society is located at 2976 Cty Rd 48.  They have several responsibilities including, but not limited to, enforcing dog control/leash laws, animal cruelty investigations, handling of suspected/reported rabies in animals, rabies vaccination clinics, animal adoptions (by law they must hold a dog for a minimum of 5 days), animal cremation services and dog census.  The society offers spaying/neutering of pets to qualified persons (based on income) where the owner pays 1/3, the vet pays 1/3 and the society pays 1/3 the cost of the procedure.  Mr. McGuigan offers an educational program to school children on how to be safe around animals.  The society does have an 85% rate of adoption.  Bill stated that not all dogs are adoptable.  Some would truly be a harm to humans if allowed to be adopted.  There are no cat control ordinances.  The only cats they deal with are those left at the shelter.  A question was asked about being able to volunteer at the shelter.  Bill said that due to liability issues, volunteers are currently not allowed.  Jean Logan shared a story about how a few years ago, after making a significant donation to the Humane Society, she was offered a lifetime membership to the Society ....... which came with an expiration date of 2007!
50/50 results:

The jackpot was $632.  Bruce Kennedy drew the six of hearts.  Tom Harradine won $27.
